Self is a sculpture; the representation of the volume that my body displaces in its most compact form; devoid of identifying and individual characteristics, a perfect generic cube.

Burnished with a white enamel paint, this sculpture has refined edges; sharp and crisp lines defining the extent of its form in space while subtly reflecting the surrounding environment and blending in.

To determine the dimensions of the cube, I filled a bathtub with water and marked the waterline before and while I was submerged underwater. I used these measurements for calculations to determine the displaced volume of water in cubic inches to extrapolate the cubic root for the length of the sculpture’s sides in inches.

Over the past twenty years, I have reflected long on this sculpture’s evolving symbolism, especially after the expansion of anonymity and loss of privacy online. This year, I am continuing this series to explore the temporal contradictions of existence in a continuation titled, Remain.
