Overhead, 2019
Acrylic on Canvas
40 inches x 22 inches
Private Collection / Commission Available

Overhead continues with a limited palette and adds titanium white for a broader layering of colors manipulated across a printed canvas surface.

Thin washes cover broad swaths of the canvas depicting an aerial view of Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, a national symbol of perseverance and success; inverted, with only portions of the field remaining visible.

Playing football while living in a small town in Texas, I became aware of sports scholarships and for many, would determine whether attending college was a possibility. For a sport that is both graceful and violent, to have a chance meant to give everything for that pursuit; despite the improbability of earning one.

That stark reality is illustrated with the subject almost entirely obscured in a camouflage; traces of the original surface visible beneath thin layers of paint.

Recognizable features of the structure are hidden and subverted, with only segments of the white yard markers visible; placeholders for distance and the symbols of progression amidst almost insurmountable odds.
